An Account of the Ladies of Llangollen, by Rev. John Prichard 62005 [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/0/0/62005 ] [Files: 62005-0.txt; 62005-h.htm] For those wishing to know: this pamphlet, originally published in Llangollen in 1876, was an attempt to provide something for the tourists who were visiting Llangollen to see the where the famous "Ladies of Llangollen" lived. The Rev. Prichard was a Baptist minister in Llangollen from 1823 and so would have known the ladies in the last few years of their lives. He doesn't really have much new to say, but does add a few local touches. All the best, David, England, still overcast but brightening

The Church Rate, by Benjamin Richings 62004 [Subtitle: a dialogue between a Churchman and a Dissenter] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/0/0/62004 ] [Files: 62004-0.txt; 62004-h.htm] For those wishing to know: this Anglican pamphlet from the 19th century was written against the dissenting groups (e.g. Methodists) who complained that they had to pay a "church rate" to fund the Church of England, but were of a different religious group. The matter was a source of great argument, particulary around 1836 when Parliament unsuccesfully tried to abolish church rates. The arguments for it (which is what the pamphlet puts forward) weren't that strong and you have to wonder if the writer really thought he had a good case. As a side point: the Rev. Benjamin Richings possibly put one or more of my ancestors in the poor house! All the best, David Overcast England

Norwich Cheap Tracts No. 42: I'm Greatly Concerned about your Soul,by C. 62003 [Author: M. A. C.] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/0/0/62003 ] [Files: 62003-0.txt; 62003-h.htm] For those wishing to know: published at some point in the 19th century, no doubt as a side-line to their main publishing business, Jarrold's of Norwich, England, had a whole series of these tracts. The key word is "cheap": you get 100 of them for 4 pennies. I purchased this with a lot of more substantial items some time ago, but have found that few of them survive, even in archives. Hence I'm releasing this alone - it's a very unconvincing story of a man who becomes more religious after his minister says he's concerned for his soul. As such it's probably Methodist. All the best, David, England, cloudy skies but bright

A Plain Statement of the Doctrines objected to in the Church of Rome 62002 [Author: Joseph Reilly] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/0/0/62002 ] [Files: 62002-0.txt; 62002-h.htm] For those wishing to know: this is a short autobiography (published 1827) of a Catholic priest in Ireland, on how he became a priest, his thoughts and mis-givings, how gradually he changed his opinions, particularly with relation to the Bible which was then starting to be distributed/suppressed in his area, and how eventually he decided to leave the Catholic church. It's a very honest book, and unlike some with similar titles, he's not condemnatory. After leaving he became a popular preacher in his area and was well-spoken of by those of his previous flock. All the best, David, England, overcast but warm

The Cross, by J. C. Ryle 62001 [Subtitle: A Tract for the Times] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/2/0/0/62001 ] [Files: 62001-0.txt; 62001-h.htm] The Rev. J. C. Ryles (1816-1900) was a leading evangelical Anglican and he wrote a great number of theological tracts, aimed at the church-goer, of which this is one, published 1851. In many ways it seems like the sort of stuff that's handed out today and so provides an insight into strands of Anglicanism in the mid-19th century. The subtitle is of course a dig at the ritualist branch of the church. All the best, David, England - overcast and quiet
