The Trial and Conviction of John Church, by A Barrister 58020 [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/5/8/0/2/58020 ] [Files: 58020-0.txt; 58020-h.htm] For those wishing to know: an account, taken in short hand, of the 1817 trial of John Church the famous preacher, for sexual assault on Adam Foreman, then 18 years old. The trial was a sensation not only given the allegations but that a minister of religion, and a very well known one at that, was involved. It was accompanied by mobs in the streets, Church being burn in effergy etc. John Church later apparently claimed this wasn't a true account of the trial, but the outcome (Church found guilty) was certainly the case. The Infamous Life of John Church, by Anonymous 58019 [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/5/8/0/1/58019 ] [Files: 58019-0.txt; 58019-h.htm] For those wishing to know: the first major pamphlet by Hay and Turner (published 1817) against John Church (c1780-1826?). No doubt published just after the trial of John Church (for molesting a young man in London), it somehow pieced together much of his life (at this stage unpublished) and brought together a large number of cases against Church. It starts with his being being found as an abandoned baby, quickly adds that he was turned out of the Foundling Hospital as "he was addicted to improper and disgusting practices", his connection with the male brothel in Vere Street, his love letters to a young man in London Borough, the sexual assaults at Banbury, then Ipswich, drunkness, abandonment of children, that "fawning on young men, that was his chief delight" etc. Interestingly it doesn't really mention the Adam Foreman case that John Church had been tried on and found guilty. It claims that at the time of the trial John Church's preaching was attended by at least a thousand people, and he earned 1,000 to 1,200 pounds a year. John Church never really refuted any of the above, but his insistence that the whole was a plot against him by less successful preachers might go some way to explaining how an obscure London printer found out so much about Church's life, just in time to publish it at the trial. The Rod in Pickle, by T. Latham 58018 [Subtitle: or, an answer to the appeal of John Church] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/5/8/0/1/58018 ] [Files: 58018-0.txt; 58018-h.htm] For those wishing to know: this is account by the Rev. Thomas Latham, a minister who took over the church at Banbury, after John Church (c1780-1826?) had been forced out of town after allegations came to light of him sleeping with and molesting boys in the houses of his church members. Latham clearly walked into an explosive situation (there were riots) without knowing anything of what had happened before. His account is simple and straightforward, and would be used by the publisher, Hay and Turner, in their repeated more explicit pamphlets against John Church. 1817 was the year when John Church eventually stood trial (and was convicted) of molesting a young man in London, and this was probably published around that time. A few remarks on the Scripture History of Saul and the witch of Endor 58017 [Author: John Church] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/5/8/0/1/58017 ] [Files: 58017-0.txt; 58017-h.htm] For those wishing to know: another sermon from John Church (c1780-1826?), this one from 1816. It's a consideration of the biblical story of King Saul, and his visit to the Witch of Endor. It reads much more like a normal sermon of the times, than something from John Church, but demonstrates his biblical quotation and reasoning skills. It cites William Huntingdon positively, despite previous works where Church claims he's not an Antinominian. All the best, David, Rather muggy England

The Speedy Appearance of Christ, by John Church 58015 [Subtitle: desired by the church] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/5/8/0/1/58015 ] [Files: 58015-0.txt; 58015-h.htm] For those wishing to know: a funeral sermon preached in 1815 by John Church (c1780-1826?). The bulk of the sermon is about how true believers like Church cannot wait to be with Christ, whether that's by dying or by a Second Coming. As with all of Church's funeral sermons there's a blow by blow account of the last days of the person who has died, including their last audible words etc. All the best, David, Overcast and muggy England

The Nature of a Gospel Church, by John Church 58014 [Subtitle: a confession of Evangelical Principles] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/5/8/0/1/58014 ] [Files: 58014-0.txt; 58014-h.htm] For those wishing to know: a short sermon, around 1814, from John Church (1780-1826?) and list of the beliefs members of his church would agree to. They are essentially what today would be evangelical ones, but without an association to a governing body, John Church owning the building, preaching and being in control. The Morning of Spiritual Youth Improved, by John Church 58012 [Subtitle: in the prospect of Old Age and its Infirmities] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/5/8/0/1/58012 ] [Files: 58012-0.txt; 58012-h.htm] For those wishing to know: this is a series of letters (or possibly short sermons) written by John Church (c1780-1826?), possibly to members of his church, using the Twelfth Chapter of Ecclesiastes in the Bible as a sort of connecting basis. It's very strange as instead of expounding the text, he spends a good deal of his time describing the human body, and also having a go at those who accused him of Antinomian theology. Published in 1814 when the scandals were widely discussed. All the best, David, Warmest England
