Plain Sermons, by James Galloway Cowan 64743 [Subtitle: Preached at Archibishop Tenison's Chapel, Regent Street] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/4/7/4/64743 ] [Files: 64743-0.txt; 64743-h.htm] For those wishing to know: before Rev. Cowan (1828-1875) became the minister of Hammersmith in west London, he was minister of an affluent church in central London, on Regent Street. This is a collection of ten of his sermons from that period. Unlike the one-off ones they aren't topical but they aren't the normal Church of England fare either. Rev. Cowan was very strict and hard on his congregation and expected everyone should put religion before everything else. All the best, David Darkest England

"Hear ye the Rod, and who hath appointed it", by James Galloway Cowan 64742 [Subtitle: A Sermon for the Fast Day, October 7, 1857] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/4/7/4/64742 ] [Files: 64742-0.txt; 64742-h.htm] For those wishing to know: Another topical sermon from Rev. Cowan (1828-1875). Just like every other Church of England clergyman, he had to give a sermon on the national Fast Day on 7 Oct. 1857, which was called by the government because of the Indian Mutiny. Cowan says the mutiny is judgement from God on Britain, not because we stole another's country, not because we failed to help India, but because we failed to try and convert the Indians to Christianity. At the end he says charity is required: but it's charity to the English in India. It was the common sentiment at the time but it's hard to read it now. All the best, David, Darkest England

The Ritual Movement, by James Galloway Cowan 64741 [Subtitle: Three plain sermons preached at St. John the Evangelist's, Hammersmith] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/4/7/4/64741 ] [Files: 64741-0.txt; 64741-h.htm] For those wishing to know: in the early 1800's Church of England services were very plain, with no special robes, choirs, ceremony etc. That was challanged by the Tractarian movement which amongst other things wanted to see a lot of older ritual restored. When Rev. Cowan (1828-1875) decided to tackle the subject in these 1866 sermons, there were heated debates in the local newspapers, special interest groups at each other's throats etc. Cowan rejected blanket ritual practises but in a surprise move (given he wasn't known as a ritualist) he defended quite a bit of the Ritualist Movement on the basis of the Bible and the established Church of England written practise. In particular he thought the church could do with better decoration and more money being spent on it. Unlike some of his other topical sermons, this is three sermons togethers, each following on from the previous one. All the best, David, Sunny England (now night so cannot see)

"Bear ye one another's burdens", by James Galloway Cowan 64735 [Subtitle: A Plain Sermon on the Lancashire Distress] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/4/7/3/64735 ] [Files: 64735-0.txt; 64735-h.htm] For those wishing to know: another short sermon on a current (1862) topic by Rev. Cowan (1828-1875). The American Civil War had interrupted cotton supplies to the cotton making districts in Lancashire and coupled with over-production, a great depression occured, with tens of thousands thrown out of work, and starving to death. Cowan tells his congregation that they have to give to help (of course), and pray (expected in a sermon), because then when the Lancashire folk die of stravation they will be waiting to thank his congregation when they reach heaven. The next parish of Kensington raised very large amounts of money to help, don't remember what Hammersmith provided. All the best, David Sunny England

The Cause and Cure of the Cattle Plague, by James Galloway Cowan 64734 [Subtitle: A Plain Sermon] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/4/7/3/64734 ] [Files: 64734-0.txt; 64734-h.htm] For those wishing to know: Rev. Cowan (1828-1875) was a very popular preacher in Hammersmith, west London, and often took an unusual approach (and hard) approach in his sermons. In this one, he says that the cattle plague which was then (1866) raging in London, was a judgement from God, and people had to turn to religion. It's a bit short (as some of his individual sermons are), but he wanted to publish his views to Hammersmith and this was an excellent way to do it. It also shows what was "going on" behind the newspaper reports etc. All the best, David, Bright but still overcast England
