A Sermon preached at Christ Church, Kensington, on May 1, 1859,by Wright 64717 [Author: William Wright] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/4/7/1/64717 ] [Files: 64717-0.txt; 64717-h.htm] For those wishing to know: May 1, 1859 was appointed as a day of thanksgiving to God in Great Britain as a result of the suppression of the Indian rebellion. Many churches had special sermons and this is one preached in Kensington, near London. The area was home to many retired military and ex-government people so perhaps the tone was guessable, but Rev. Wright felt the whole of the Indian problems were caused by the UK not trying to eliminate Islam and Hinduism - it's a very unconfortable read but shows middle class views in the area at the time. All the best, David, Cold and damp England

A Farewell Sermon, by Joseph Holden Pott 64716 [Subtitle: delivered on Sunday, October 23, A.D. 1842, at the Parish Church of St. Mary Abbotts, Kensington] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/4/7/1/64716 ] [Files: 64716-0.txt; 64716-h.htm] For those wishing to know: Archdeacon Pott had been the minister in Kensington for some time and this is his final sermon. It's very difficult to make out what he's actually preaching about: perhaps it made sense to his regular listeners who had heard parts before? Having read it I'm glad I study the area after he'd left(!) All the best, David, Cold and damp England

Palm Sunday, by Maria Callcott 64715 [Subtitle: or, Little Mary's Saturday's walk] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/4/7/1/64715 ] [Files: 64715-0.txt; 64715-h.htm] For those wishing to know: this was written by Lady Callcott in 1840 to help raise funds for some of the projects for the poor within Kensington, near London, England. On the surface it's the clergyman's daughter noticing various plants which are useful in medicine, and her father explaining explaining how some Palm Sunday traditions came about. By today's standards it's cringe-worthy but I'm rather glad lady Callcott was involved in helping the Kensington poor, and that we see a description of some of them in this short pamphlet. All the best, David, Cold and damp England
