Christian Marriage Indissoluble, by James Galloway Cowan 64733 [Subtitle: A Plain Sermon] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/4/7/3/64733 ] [Files: 64733-0.txt; 64733-h.htm] For those wishing to know: Rev. James Galloway Cowan (1828-1875) was a Church of England minister who had a reputation for excellent preaching. He became the minister at Hammersmith, west London, in the 1860's and this links him to my research interest. Although he published some collections of sermons, when a topic was "hot" he'd publish an individual sermon so that his views could be known in Hammersmith. This sermon, in response to the 1857 Divorce Act says that the Church didn't recognise any divorce - a bit rich considering the Church of England came out of Henry's need for a divorce! He's very readable and doesn't take the usual oft-repeated arguments. All the best, David, Overcast England PS. Cowan had a lot of children and his first wife died: he remarried but died within a year aged 48. This second wife ended up as step-mother to a whole house of grown-up children decades later.

Bible-Burning, by John C. Miller 64732 [Subtitle: the substance of a sermon preached in St. Martin's Church, Birmingham, on Sunday evening, Dec. 10, 1848] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/4/7/3/64732 ] [Files: 64732-0.txt; 64732-h.htm] For those wishing to know: this is another local incident, in Birmingham, England, where Protestants and Catholic clergy were interfering with each others' people, and it resulted in a Bible being burn. There's quite a lot of insight in this sermon as to what was going on, the background, people involved etc. It's written from the Protestant side of course, but does contain a statement from the Catholic side too. All the best, David, Overcast but bright England

A Voice from the Fire, by Robert Wallace 64731 [Subtitle: A Sermon occasioned by the public burning of the Bible at Kingstown, by the Redemptorist Fathers, on the 5th of November, 1855] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/4/7/3/64731 ] [Files: 64731-0.txt; 64731-h.htm] For those wishing to know: I'd stumbled on a reference to the "recent Bible burnings" whilst transcribing a Kensington book, so had a look for anything contemporary to give a bit more background. This is a short sermon preached in Dublin where two religious groups were in conflict, one was so provoked as to burn a Bible, only a page of which was rescued from the fire (hence the title). It's mainly the Protestant group saying how terrible the Catholic group were, but it contains a first hand account of it. All the best, David, Overcast but bright England

Biblical Revision, by Edward Slater 64728 [Subtitle: considerations in favour of a revised translation of Holy Scripture] [Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/6/4/7/2/64728 ] [Files: 64728-0.txt; 64728-h.htm] For those wishing to know: Slater was one of a group of scholars who were suggesting that the traditional English translation of the Bible, the King James, needed an update. This is a scholarly pamphlet (1856) suggesting principles that would need to be considered. It also contains a lot of parrallel passages contrasting the KJV against what he thought would be a better translation. All the best, David, Cold and damp England
